The Forester is Subaru’s compact crossover SUV that is redesigned for 2009 with an increase in size and a more SUV-like appearance. With styling that ties it more closely to the new Impreza and the redesigned Tribeca, the new Forester is 4.5 inches taller, 1.8 inches wider and 3 inches longer than its predecessor for additional cargo capacity and more rear-seat legroom. Subaru is the first company to offer all-wheel drive across its entire model line. The Forester was introduced for the 1998 model year and redesigned for 2003. Built on the Impreza platform, the Forester feature's Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.
The redesigned 2009 Subaru Forester continues to be powered by two different 2.5-liter horizontally opposed engines: the standard 170-horsepower version and the 224-horsepower turbocharged option with 226 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm. Powertrain updates include improved low-end torque, lower emissions, and the optional 4-speed automatic features SPORTSHIFT manual shifting. Inside the dash styling reflects the twin-cockpit design that flows into the center console first seen in the Tribeca and adapted to the new Impreza. The rear seat includes a new available retractable center tray and available seatback adjustment.
