Audi is set to debut its long anticipated A7 four-door coupe, a model that goes up against Mercedes-Benz's CLS, Porsche's Panamera, and would have targeted BMW's CS if the Bavarian brand hadn't canceled it earlier this month.

While it would make sense that the A7 would be one step up from the A6 and one down from the A8, the odd number has more to do with its coupe status than any rung in the Ingolstadt company's corporate ladder. While Audi will probably look to the A6 for underpinnings, the A8's aluminum construction being less flexible and more costly for redevelopment, this will join the R8 and A8 as a flagship car for the four-ringed brand; just as high-end but with a different mission. http://car-reviews.automobile.com/images/cars/images/7677/inline_2010_audi_a7_rendering.jpg

Audi has targeted global sales of around 40,000 units according to a report by Automotive News, with a launch date of late 2009 or early 2010.
